Palacio began her career as an art director and graphic designer, designing book jackets for Paul Auster, Thomas Pynchon and others. During the course of her career she designed many hundreds of book covers, covering both fiction and non-fiction books. White Bird materialized from Palacio's own circumstances as well as her desire to both support the teachers who wrote to her after “The Julian Chapter,” a Wonder-related story, and provide a much-needed, age-appropriate introduction to the Holocaust. Palacio was writing another novel in 2016, but found she needed to set it aside. White Bird follows a young Jewish girl hidden in the midst of Nazi-occupied France, in this captivating tale brought to life by Palacio’s gorgeous illustrations.
